The farm is far more than a visitor attraction and has a fascinating history, which began with the Romans who created the mill pond and continued through Victorian bakers and wartime food production with the Land Army girls. Curriculum-linked sessions include pond dipping, tractor rides, lamb shows and tours of the 18th century working watermill. Sacrewell can work with teachers to develop a tailor-made visits to meets specific curriculum needs and has recently launched an exciting new residential farm camp offer which is ideal for older pupils.

This following itinerary was developed for a KS4 group to meet the assessment criteria for the BTEC First Certificate in Business, Unit 3: Promoting a Brand and is available, and can be adapted, for other groups.

10:30am: The group arrives and is welcomed to the function room which will be the base for the day. Pupils then start working in small groups to evaluate examples of Sacrewell’s adverts, signs, logos and interpretation and begin to build up an understanding of the brand.

10:45am: Students meet Harriet O’Shea, Sacrewell’s communications officer. She then introduces pupils to the farm’s charitable aims and values, its business profile and target audience groups.

11:15am: Time to get thinking. The students work in small groups to plan a promotion for a real activity or event that is coming up at the farm, following a brief provided by Harriet. This activity helps develop transferable skills such as time management, budgeting and communications.

12:30pm: Lunch in the function room.

1pm: The self-guided farm visit continues. Students search for the perfect spot to take an Instagram photo that sums up the Sacrewell brand. They then meet some of the farm animals, which include British Landrace pigs and Lincoln Longwool sheep, before exploring the heritage farm buildings.

1.45pm: Debrief with Harriet. Students share their thoughts on how the Sacrewell brand is promoted and have the opportunity to ask further questions.
