Primary and Secondary school teachers can now take advantage of a range of new outdoor learning resources launched by Boots as part of its Soltan Sun Ready campaign.
The resources are suitable for pupils aged five to 14 and can be downloaded for free from the website www.soltansunready.com.
All resources on the site have been designed to promote sun safety, but they also have curriculum links that range from Science and Literacy to PHSE and Geography.
Resources available to Primary school teachers include guides on how to teach children about shadows outdoors on a sunny day, how to make a bug hotel, how to make a human sun dial, and how to bring the subject of sun safety to life.
Additional resources are available that consolidate learning back on the classroom, too. These range from a lesson plan for teaching about how other cultures protect themselves from the sun, to a worksheet that explains the Science behind sun care.
Resources for Secondary school pupils, meanwhile, include guides on how to make outdoor shelters using nothing but garden canes, rubber bands and sheets, and ideas for exploring the subject of photosynthesis outdoors.
Classroom resources include a lesson plan for teaching about the Science of the UV index and a worksheet for linking the story of Robinson Crusoe to the Science of survival.
Free Explorer Packs
Through Soltan Sun Ready, Boots UK is providing 1,000 free Explorer Packs to the first registered Primary schools.
Packs include product samples, hats, stickers and badges.
The Sun Ready Campaign
The Boots Sun Ready campaign has been created to educate children about the importance of avoiding sunburn.
Studies suggest just one or two cases of severe sunburn during childhood can lead to the development of malignant melanoma, which is the most common cancer for 15 to 35 year olds in the UK.
