PGL has launched two programmes under its REACH Framework to introduce young adventurers to new outdoor learning experiences.
The school packages are available at a number of PGL locations including the Brecon Beacons, Dorset, Lancashire, Suffolk and Wiltshire.
Designed for residential first-timers
The Pioneer! Programme is aimed at Years 3&4 who haven’t been on a residential before. Trips can range from two to five days and are available at a number of PGL locations.
Designed to encourage pupils to try new things in a safe and supportive environment, the programme encompasses a range of activities, the exploration of nature and new experiences. Everything has been matched to ages and abilities of the year groups, giving them the right level of encouragement and reassurance to try new things.
Activity worksheets are available before the residentials to help prepare the children for being away and to discuss what they are looking forward to. There are also modified timetables, for example earlier meal timetables and longer for the children to eat.
A new itinerary for Year 5
The Master! Programme for Year 5 students has a greater focus on Bushcraft. Available from spring next year, the itinerary runs over two nights and will encourage the pupils to think critically, build resilience and improve their communication skills, with real outdoor learning to support their classroom learning.
Over their stay, which ideally is a two night/three day break, the students will do everything from creating wild wood shelters to mastering knots, building camp fires, learning how to use a compass, plus there will be a classic adrenaline PGL activity before they head home. Again, sessions will be tailored towards age, ability and learning outcomes.
PGL Beyond
A number of outdoor education brands including PGL, NST, European Study Tours and Studylink have recently come together under the umbrella of PGL Beyond. PGL, which has run children’s activity camps since 1957, is the flagship brand operating centres in the UK, France and Australia.
PGL Beyond’s CEO Anthony Jones said: “With the pressures working in education, teachers need to know they have expertise and knowledge in the external providers they work with.
“We are that expert; we are the leader in our field and one that is constantly investing to ensure we meet the needs of students across all age groups. We know outdoor education provides breakthroughs alongside classroom learning, and together, we can achieve so much for young people.”
