There was an unexpected addition to the 2024 School Travel Awards ceremony when it was announced that there would be an award for outstanding contribution to learning outside the. And what a fitting recipient.
It was the first time someone had been presented with an award of this nature at the School Travel Awards.
Peter Carne OBE: we salute you
Peter was a teacher of geography at two London comprehensive schools for nearly 15 years and then for five years was seconded to the Inverliever Lodge Trust to manage its residential centre on the banks of Loch Awe in Scotland.
In 1990, he was appointed to set up and manage Greenwich’s Environmental Curriculum Service from its nine acre wildlife centre in south east London. Peter then worked for Learning through Landscapes from 2000 to 2006, as Head of LTL in London and later as Director of Operations.
Between 2006 and 2009, he was seconded to the Department for Children, Schools and Families as one of two Learning Outside the Classroom Manifesto Champions, responsible for promoting its importance and impact. It was here that Peter worked with a variety of partners and key stakeholders to create the LOtC Quality Badge and Council for Learning Outside the Classroom, where he was a valuable trustee for many years - and still remains a special adviser.
Peter joined Learning Away as Project Leader in 2011 which did incredible work for the LOtC cause.
He was awarded an OBE in the 2010 New Year Honor’s List for services to education.
Peter has also been a huge help and support to the School Travel Awards and what the initiative has worked to achieve over the years to highlight the value of educational visits. This has included being a regular judge for the ‘My Best School Trip’ Award.
Thank you, Peter - and congratulations.
