School groups can take part in tailored workshops at the London museum.

Artists & War: The Whole Picture is a cross-curriculum learning programme developed to support the national curriculum for both history and art & design at Key Stage 3. The learning programme has been launched in conjunction with the opening of the Blavatnik Art, Film and Photography Galleries.

Students will get the opportunity to study the connection between art and conflict with an innovative programme using a specially designed app, led by an expert.

Teachers can book one of three sessions focused on either art & design, or history. Depending on the session booked, students will explore how artists have captured and commented on the experiences of war on the western front in World War One or the home front in World War Two.

The 90-minute workshop introduces learners to different themes and equips them with iPads loaded with a specially designed app. Working in small groups, students will navigate the galleries, unlocking insights and promoting critical thinking and discussion through augmented reality technology.

Get to know the new sessions

World War One: Learn about the trenches of the Western Front, medicine, propaganda and censorship of World War One through the perspective of artists, photographers and designers.

World War Two: Investigate life on the home front during World War Two, and the propaganda that shaped the lives of everyone who lived through the war.

Art & Design: Explore how war shaped the work of artists, photographers, and designers and how they influenced war and conflict. Students then craft a digital journal using newfound knowledge and perspectives, which will be emailed to teachers and serve as a classroom resource.

The sessions have capacity for 30 students. They take place at 10:30am and 12:30pm on weekdays, with no sessions taking place on Wednesdays.
